Last year the generous Thomas Parry created some Christmas cards for us to sell and raise funds so that we can keep the building open.

As has been the case for many of our friends, neighbours and colleagues in the Jewellery Quarter, not being able to welcome as many people into our doors has caused us to suffer a great deal of loss. The Christmas period is drawing near and many of us are looking for ways to connect with those that we love and wish to have close to us.

We are excited to announce that we have appointed Revd. David Tomlinson as the new Vicar of St Paul's. He comes with much experience and understanding of the city of Birmingham. We are excited by his energy and vision for St Paul's.

I am delighted to have been appointed Vicar of St Paul’s and to have been called to serve in the Jewellery Quarter. I am very grateful to Andrew for his excellent leadership and his contribution to the community over recent years, and will be looking to nurture the life that has arisen and strengthen the church’s role in the JQ, and city. I greatly look forward to getting to know everyone. I come with a rich and varied experience of ministry, and a history and commitment to collaboration in and beyond the church. I am currently chairing Thrive Together Birmingham the community regeneration arm of the diocese, for instance. I am father to grown-up daughters and am married to Jenny. Cycling is my main sporting pursuit, now that my footballing and cricketing days are over, and I have completed LEJOG (Land’s End to John O’Groats) and MIZMAL - the Irish equivalent). Cooking, reading and the arts are my other passions. I also write, on leadership, worship, love and spirituality, and my second book is to be published in the autumn. I hope that it wouldn’t be too long before I can be licensed by the Bishop, and begin to enjoy being and working with you.

Black Lives Matter

Why Black Lives Matter to St Paul's Church JQ

Here at St Paul’s hearts have been broken because of the silence and indifference seen in the Church. Admittedly, it has taken us a while to say something and for that we apologise. However, this isn’t a matter that will fade just because it does from the news cycle.

Far too often terminology like ‘in light of recent events’ has been used. Unfortunately, these are not recent events. Crimes against black people across the world and here in the UK are not new and are not recent. The protests staged over the weekend were not because of recent events but were sparked by the more recent killings of black people - Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade and countless others. There are even more countless and uncounted others that are not recent.

For many years people have been fighting these injustices in USA, UK and here in Birmingham. We must continue in that fight against injustice.

The bible is very important to Christians and there are many ways in which it tells us the mistreatment, oppression and exploitation of any people group is wrong.

As Christians we believe that we are called ‘to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.' (Micah 6:8)

            Act Justly

We must recognise that we live in a sinful and broken world. God demands his people actively seek justice for those being oppressed and confront their oppressors, whether individuals, institutions or systems and seek lasting change.

God's people are instructed to pray for God's Spirit to triumph over the principalities and powers that are using these events and systems of injustice to oppress and hold people in bondage.

            Love Mercy

All human beings are created in God's image and are of equal value.

We are to consider everyone better than ourselves and put their interests first with no favouritism towards those who are like us or prejudice against those who are not.

            Walk Humbly

Scripture recognises negative attitudes or actions toward others as sin requiring our repentance and the help of His Spirit to change.

We admit that the Church of England was complicit in justifying the institution of slavery and therefore must act tirelessly to ensure that we work against the covert as well as overt injustices in our places of worship and offices, just as tirelessly as our forbearers did in abolishing the new affront to human dignity.

This means that we will tirelessly analyse every policy, every procedure, every practice, every element of our way worshipping and our way of working, to ensure equity for members of the black community.

As a heritage site we will look to uncover the untold stories of St Paul’s Church and the Jewellery Quarter. We will do our best to better understand the roles of black people in the life of St Paul’s Church in the Jewellery Quarter.

St Paul's Church JQ is proud to be a part of the Jewellery Quarter Heritage Squad. Our membership means that we get to be connected to an amazing network of volunteers.

These volunteers have supported us and other organisations in the quarter on various projects. For us it has looked like supporting us at our community and live music events. If you have a little wander around our website you'll see that our team is quite small, so these volunteers are invaluable to us.

Other performers we’ve had include the Birmingham Gay Symphony Orchestra (BGSO), Midland Chamber Orchestra and Vivat! Choir. Unfortunately these artists aren’t on Spotify but have the ability to connect with an individual on a transcendent level.

I think that is the power of classical music, particularly when it is orchestral because when it is done well you have nowhere to escape. You have to confront your very depths and yet somehow at the very end of a concert you feel soothed.

         Surviving Lockdown and Covid-19

Today’s blog post features a different member of staff here at St Paul’s JQ. Matthew contracted the Covid-19 virus during lockdown. In the videos below he tells us about the anxieties he felt whilst he was unwell and shares the different ways in which he copes in isolation, with a few tips for you too.

Here's a little bit more about Matthew and his relationship with St Paul's JQ.

Who are you and how long have you been a part of the St Paul's JQ community?

I'm Matt Edwards and I am the Parish Administrator here at St. Paul's in the Jewellery Quarter. I first came to St. Paul's in 2013 as a countertenor in the (then) choir, and became Churchwarden in 2014. In 2017 I was asked to help cover a staff vacancy whilst I was completing my M.A. degree, and the lovely people who make up the St. Paul's community and beautiful JQ neighbourhood have kept me here ever since.

How did you find out about St Paul's JQ?

I was looking for a welcoming and inclusive church where I could worship and participate in the wider activities of the church, which included singing in a choir. Having sung in various ensembles and choirs in Birmingham I knew that St. Paul's had a good reputation for music-making and enjoyed a close relationship with Birmingham Conservatoire, so when I found the church listed on the Inclusive Church website as a safe and welcoming church I came along to try it out.

How have you been finding the lockdown over the past few weeks? What impact has it had on your work, mental health and well-being?

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have daydreamed about not having to go to work, but having experienced the lockdown which is an essential part of beating this pandemic I can safely say that I cannot wait to get back to work! At the moment the team at St. Paul's are all working from home to ensure some continuity in our day to day business, to support our worshipping community and to plan ahead for when we re-open and continue to work as a significant performance venue in Birmingham.

During the lockdown I have been sticking to three simple steps to maintain good mental health:

           STAYING ACTIVE

           - Taking daily exercise either on my own or with my black Labrador Oscar. Limiting the amount of time I spend on social media has also been helpful in reducing anxiety.

STAYING CREATIVE - I have finished all those books I have started and recently taken up knitting. I'm not sure what woollen creation I'll have at the end lockdown - but watch this space!

STAYING CONNECTED - I've been in touch with family and friends every day, either by phone call or video call. I've also started to write letters - particularly to my elderly relatives who might not be au fait with video calls and social media.

The Bishop of Birmingham was delighted to license the Revd Douglas Machiridza as Area Dean of Handsworth and Central on Sunday afternoon 29th March. The service was due to take place at St Martin in the Bullring, but due to the current restrictions, those participating did so from their homes, via a video call.

The short service included Psalm 121 and Fr. Douglas’ daughter reading John 12: 20-33. The Venerable Jenny Tomlinson, Archdeacon of Birmingham, the Revd Dr Mark Pryce, Director of Ministry and other members of Fr. Douglas’ family witnessed the Revd Jeremy Allcock and Mr. Wayne Simmonds present Fr. Douglas to the Bishop on behalf of the interview panel, and watched him make the usual Declaration of Assent and Oaths of Allegiance and canonical Obedience. Bishop David then read the Licence and blessed the new Area Dean, who responded by leading prayers.

Reflecting on the Bible reading, the Bishop highlighted Douglas’ role in the new Deanery as being like the apostle Andrew, in enabling others to see Jesus. Douglas commented:

‘I am thrilled that the Bishop of Birmingham has now licensed me as the new and first full time Area Dean of the enhanced deanery of Handsworth and Central. It’s an added privilege to serve in the area where I’ve spent the greater part of my ordained ministry. I am very much looking forward to sharing ministry with both lay and ordained colleagues in this new Deanery and am particularly looking forward to being a listening ear and pastoral partner and support as we together figure out what mission and ministry looks like in our context. We’re tasked with implementing our People and Places strategy so that we continue to develop as a Transforming Church, in the service of everyone in our city and region.’

A service of celebration to inaugurate the new Deanery will be arranged as soon as practicable.

Hidden Gems: Free Lunchtime Performances in St Paul's Square

Find out more about St Paul's new lunchtime concert series.

St Paul’s Church is launching a series of lunchtime performances showcasing the ‘Hidden Gems’ of the city. The series will start on Tuesday 31st March with Millicent Chapanda.

“At St Paul's Church JQ we pride ourselves in being the hub of the Jewellery Quarter. As part of that we're looking to give a platform to up-and-coming musicians in the city.” – Revd. Andrew Gorham.

Audience members are welcome to bring their lunch with them and enjoy a 40 minute performance by musicians from all across the city. The event is free to attend.

           Millicent Chapanda

is a proud cultural artist with a vibrant mission to bring the lived experience of women in Zimbabwe onto international world music stages.

In performance, although her music goes deep into ancient Shona cultural heritage, it's clear that Milli is keen to sing out loud on gender issues and the barriers affecting women in the diaspora & back in Zimbabwe, and this gives her fine performances a real cutting edge onstage.

A Milli Chapanda show is above all a celebration Shona-style that calls on those dancing ancestral spirits to rise through the trance of mbira's cascading sounds to the pull of the voice & the insistent pulse of the deep ngoma drum & hosho shakers.
